Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid (Legal Aid) is seeking a health care intake and legal secretary for its St. Cloud office. This position is grant funded and is offered at 75% – 100% time, depending on funding. Ongoing funding is being sought.
BACKGROUND: Legal Aid’s St. Cloud office provides civil representation to low-income people in nine central Minnesota rural counties. Senior Law and Health Care Outreach are provided in additional counties. The office receives funding from a variety of public and private sources and enjoys strong support from the organized bar. Legal Aid does not receive funding from the Legal Services Corporation. St. Cloud is a city of 66,000, located 65 miles northwest of Minneapolis/St. Paul. There are three area colleges, community theaters, a thriving arts community, and easy access to state parks and the Lake Wobegon Bike Trail.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Responsibilities include: conducting initial client intakes (determining eligibility, interviewing client to collect facts in the case, writing a summary of the interview, and entering information into a case management database); scheduling appointments; managing referrals; providing support for health care paralegal and attorney staff; and performing other tasks as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants must be detail-oriented; be proficient using Microsoft Windows and Office; have the ability to relate to the client community; and be self-motivated. Second language ability, particularly Spanish or Somali, strongly preferred. Travel to outreach sites may be required. Legal training, knowledge of community resources, experience with case management software, and experience with diverse populations are helpful. The abilities to multi-task and work well under pressure are important.
HOURS/SALARY: Starting salary is $15.68 to $16.20 per hour, DOE. Benefits include vacation, sick leave, family medical, life, and short-term and long-term disability insurance.
